Somewhere along the way, Tony lost his tail. We don't know how. We don't know when. What we know is this: he kept on swimming.
Day after day, the underwater camera picks up the same silvery flash, the same gold-and-blue stripes, the same unmistakable jagged edge where a tail used to be. Viewers from around the world tune in just to spot him.
He's become more than a pinfish. He's a mascot, a meme, and quietly — a reminder that you don't need to be whole to be unstoppable.
Tony, mid-cruise. Tail not pictured (because there isn't one).
Pinfish are opportunistic omnivores. Here's what Tony's been spotted snacking on:
Tony's missing tail isn't just a quirk. It's why this site is here.
Someone very close to me has spent their whole life navigating the world without a full limb, most people take for granted. They didn't choose it. They were born this way. And they've spent decades figuring out their own way to do everything — work, hobbies, family — while everyone around them assumed they couldn't, or shouldn't, or wouldn't.
They worked through it. They retired from a long career, then went right back to a new job within a year because sitting still wasn't them. They've come through surgeries, illness, more surgeries. And they're still going.
When I started watching the pier cam and noticed Tony — a little fish missing a piece of himself, still cruising past the camera like nothing was wrong — I felt something I couldn't quite name. Now I can. He reminded me of someone I love.
That's what No Tail Tony means to me. And probably to a lot of you, too.
Maximum grit. Minimum quit. Whatever life takes from you, you find your own way to keep swimming.
Tony usually shows up within 10 minutes of tuning in.
Real fish. Real pier. Real fans. That's the Gulf Coast.
